Optimizing the Chemistry of Plating Baths
Electroplating brighteners and leveling agents are crucial for producing reflective, smooth, and ductile metal coatings. However, maintaining the delicate balance of organic additives in the bath can be challenging.
Common Brightener Defects & Solutions
1. Dullness or Lack of Luster
Symptom: Plated components emerge with a matte, foggy appearance rather than a mirror-like sheen.
Cause: Depletion of primary brighteners or organic breakdown product accumulation.
Solution: Perform a Hull Cell test to calibrate brightener additions, or use carbon treatment to filter out organic contaminants. Integrating specialized additives like SusCat-I Cationic Polymer acts as a powerful leveller to restore brilliant reflectivity.
2. High Current Density (HCD) Burning
Symptom: Rough, dark, or powdery deposits on the edges and corners of parts.
Cause: Excessive current density, low metal concentration, or lack of carrier brighteners.
Solution: Lower the rectifier current or increase bath agitation. Check that carrier brighteners are replenished to suppress HCD deposition.
3. Brittle Deposits
Symptom: The plated metal layer cracks when bent or subjected to stress.
Cause: High internal stress caused by excessive primary brightener additions or metallic impurities (iron, copper, zinc).
Solution: Run dummy plating cycles (low current density electrolysis) to plate out metallic impurities, and monitor brightener dosage rates strictly.
